Never A RiverThere is a place by the river
that I will never take you to.
Our lips will never meet by waters edge,
our toes never dip into the coolness.
Your hand will never caress
my bare sunburned shoulder,
nor slip down the strap
of my summer dress.
I will never offer my hand
to lead you down the stone
stairs, nor will I reveal the
faerie pool hidden by moss.
This had been my wish,
but your choice has made it
Heart of the PaperWe slam like moths against
a windowpane, in search
of the light. Were listless,
drunk with our lust, fat-bellied
spiders spinning webs for each
other. We must crack this cocoon,
tear a hole in the heart of the paper.
Must unravel the wings, snip our
strings. Depart this brittle branch
and take flight.
SteamYouve got water in your veins, too
cool to feed my heat. I melt your ice
heart and we blend into steam. I need a
man with blood like lava to love me.
TricksWhat cards are up that sleeve?
What rabbits hide in that shabby top hat?
Where did the magic go while I was gone?
I know youve been getting up
to your old tricks.
Your threadbare tuxedo doesnt dazzle.
Your shoes have lost their shine.
Your sleight of hand cant misdirect
my heart. I wont pretend
to be fooled.
I wont bunch up and let you
box me in. You cant saw me in half.
Im on the other side of the stage now.
In the audience I clap
Cut-Glass QueenI have journeyed on a road that I cannot return
fromthese dark woods are made of trees
with bitterly bright-feathered bird-branches,
and I fly above them in my blue balloon,
but the basket tips low, they peck, they scratch
and my ballast must be thrownI have no anchor
now, I am free to roam, but you still hold me
I cannot believe what I have done to be
your false queen this diadem digs
into my scalp like a surgeons
scalpel, and I waited for the weight to lift
me up, let me loose, let me breeze
away, but what can I say that cuts
You are no king, just the lowly jester I
expected to give me a ring but you have
proven me wrong and oh, what a sting!
but it turned to laughter
who knew betrayal could lift you forever after?
I am not your cut-glass queen, not now,
nor have I ever been. I am just a woman
on her own adventure, my parasol shades
me from sunlight, my telescope peers far
into the skies, and my brass goggles see
through the fog
Ladybug The beauty of a soul is inspiring, unfolding
& have you seen the slim wing of the ladybug
shimmer red/black and then disappear? I've
always been the one watching them fly away.
Essence of MatterYou and I matter:
Matter makes the stars.
You are made of star-stuff,
interstellar dust. From
dust we came and to dust
we all return.
Your best friend is made
of raspberries and pickles,
ice cream gone runny in a
blue ceramic bowl. Your best
friend misses your star-self,
the only constellation
Ode on JeansSexy jeans black midnight encasing
thighs, shrouding legs I'd like to
see. Blue jeans don't excite, they
hang wrinkled, withered, from skinny
hips. Men as statues, shirtless in
black jeans smile, goatish Pans all.
Why Her?Why her? She never understood,
never could read the lines of code
or rapture about the cosmos.
Why heró she disdained your
symbols for another set, removed
her mind from your realms.
Why her? She was a dilettante,
a wanton ignorer of your heart's
loves, unable to breathe your art.
Why heró the silence she gave
you ate up will, desire, dreams,
struck down the daring in you.
Why her? She wanted her own
life, gave you no thanks, demanded
all your blood and drank it, too.
Why heró she drew you into
a straight black line on the blank
page, gave you shape and form.
